Newspaper Analysis
According to the research I have performed with this newspaper analysis assignment, I have realized many interesting facts that I would not have known if it was not for this assignment. By reading the articles of the Cincinnati Enquirer, that were located in the cover pages on the Art, Business, Front and Sports sections it was intriguing to learn how the writers use the titles, genders, races and descriptions within their articles. Along with tracking the four front pages for seven consecutive days I kept up to date with certain articles mostly on the local front page.
The articles I made sure I followed were the ones that were concerning the elderly woman who refused to give her neighbor’s football back, after the ball went into her yard numerous times. After she refused to cooperate the child’s parents called the police. The police eventually took the elderly woman to jail and booked her for a couple of hours. After the woman was released and she was able to go back to her house, reports claim that story made national news. Along with making national news, Dr. Phil was also said to have asked if the woman would make an appearance on his show.
Through following new articles for seven straight days, you learn a thing or two about how the writers of the articles use specifics in their stories. On the Arts front page section that I tracked I found that the articles on this page used more of a gender type clarification strategy rather than titles or race. I think the reason for this is because the Arts section is more of an informative about lifestyle and arts that are up and coming within the tri-state area. The titles that were used however were mostly of female titles. Many of the articles were in regards to cooking, entertainment and other interesting events and topics pertaining to but not limited to women.
With the Business front pages, I found that the gender type clarifications were equal with male and female. For mentions of race, only one type was mentioned once throughout all seven days of the research. As for the gender titles and descriptions they were mostly male titles. Although many companies are ran by men, the women were not far behind with the comparison between male and female titles and descriptions. Just because there are not as many female titles listed in the Business section, it does not mean that females do not hold higher positions within companies; it might mean that the females were busy working rather than taking interviews or doing press for their company.
For the Front page section being mostly “breaking news” topics or most recent developments for the paper, I found race was only mentioned three times – with male over female. When it came to researching the amount of times gender was discussed not as much as I thought. Female was more than male in the section. For titles and descriptions, male titles were higher than female titles by a significant amount.
The Sports sections that I researched I found that there were a significantly larger amount of male titles and descriptions rather than female titles and descriptions. An explanation of that could be because not many women are involved with coaching and managing sports teams. Although we were told that race could be addressed within the Sports section, I found that race was not mentioned throughout any of the articles I read. Although there were some mentions of gender throughout the section, male references were the same amount as the female references.
As for what I learned in this assignment and through researching the Cincinnati Enquirer, I learned two things. I think that it is important to refrain from using race and specific gender titles when it comes to writing fair new articles for the public. The job of a journalist is to report fair news without bias. If a journalist were to use demographics such as race and gender in a story that did not necessarily need that information, they could be releasing more information than needed. I also learned that I need to follow the newspaper more often and closely, because I gained a lot of helpful information throughout reading the paper and completing the assignment.

A great dilemma to face
This dilemma is asking if it's acceptable to accept a better offer after you already agreed to another one prior? It's basically discussing opportunities for positions in the work place. It's possible for a person to apply for more than one position, especially if you're a recent college graduate. The articles continues to explain the professional way of going about accepting or "bowing out" of the position.
My thoughts...
I was in a situation similar during the summer. I knew all of the benefits of having an on campus job, so I applied in one office that needed a receptionist. I was an Orientation Leader over the summer and once school started I wouldn't have a job anymore. Through working as a Leader over the summer I knew that there's more of a connect to my major of Public Relations than just answering phones and making copies. My boss from the summer offered me a position to continue working in the office and to continue working with orientation type events and promotions. I participated in my interview for the other office and heard back within a week of the interview. Just after the interview, the office from my summer job approached me for another job. I thought about my options and decided to take the orientation office job rather than being a receptionist for the other office. I contacted the other office and explained the situation and the hiring manager explained that if it would help me with my major and if I had more interest in the orientation office position then she would suggest I take the orientation job.
I think being honest about your situation is better than making up an excuse as for why you're not able to work for that particular company.

Fundraising dilemmas make for hard decisions
This dilemma deals with a situation in Tallahassee, Florida that had a donor who wanted to donate more than a quarter of a million dollars to a nonprofit organization. The problem is that the donor didn't agree with the management of the organization. The issue is how far will the organization go for the money. If the organization absolutely needs the money to stay open and active, are they willing to change everything in order to accept the money?
My thoughts ...
If I was in this dilemma & I was in the position of the president of the organization, I would try and work out an agreement with what changes the donor would like to see compared to what the organization stands for. The money is a large amount and it could help many people but changing everything the organization has done in the past to get it where it is now is something I'm not sure I'd be willing to change.
